This year I bought and erected two new aerials and now get all the Freeview channels from another and more distant transmitter.Īs I said I could buy a new Freeview PVR or an Openbox receiver (cheap) to take advantage of USB recording as I have the option of sat or freeview.

I have a Freeview PVR and two sat dishes one 90cm pointed at 13E (now never used) and a Sky dish which I put up because at the time I couldn't get one or two channels from the local relay transmitter so bought a Sky box for ten quid off a friend and it did the job. These types of boxes are often Chinese in origin, cheap and cheerful to an extent, but you get what you pay for.

I'd also be aware that the box may not receive the Freesat guide so it may only display 'now and next' for the channel your viewing but it is capable of receiving a usb epg guide file or to download them off the net - this might not be complete though. The second f-type connector is an output so you could attach another box (again though that would only be able to view what was on the same mux) but there have been reports of this shorting out, or that the first box needs to be on so the second can receive. They have only one tuner built into them so you can only record to usb the channel you are currently watching or have scheduled. Some people use them to receive encrypted signals by doing this ( illegaly getting sky channels). From my understanding they are satellite receivers capable of running custom firmware. I'm not an expert and haven't personally used one, I have only anecdotal accounts.
